FAQs

Below are listed many of the frequently asked questions we receive on a daily basis. Look through this list as it may answer one or more of the questions you may have regarding your HVAC system and some trouble shooting tips as well as answers about our operation, service capabilities and maintenance programs.

Heating & Air Conditioning Systems

  1. What systems do you service and install?

We service all makes and models of heating and cooling equipment up to 5 ton capacity for the residential market and up to 10 ton capacity for the commercial market.

We install primarily Trane heating, cooling and heat pump systems. We also install Mitsubishi ductless split systems, Water Furnace Geothermal systems, and Thermo Pride oil burning systems.

  2. Do you install variable speed heating and cooling systems?

Yes. Trane offers a complete line of variable speed A/C, Heat Pump and Air Handler units.

  3. What is the advantage of using a heat pump?

The newer variable speed Trane heat pump systems not only work like an air conditioner but they also extract heat from the air and can be used to heat your home and only use your furnace as a back up if the outside air temperature is below around 38 degrees F. This means you are using much less natural gas or propane to heat your home. In most cases you will save over 40% in heating costs compared to a standard gas furnace system.

  4. What is the average price for a new heating/cooling system?

Prices vary with the equipment selected, but on average the installed price for a complete system will range from $3,800.00 for a 1.5 ton system to over $10,000.00 for a 5 ton system.

  5. How long will it take to install a system once we make our selection?

Depending upon the season the system you purchase and our schedule we can often install your system the next day. In almost all cases we can install the new equipment within a week of signing the contract.

  2. Do you offer a maintenance program?

Yes. We have developed our Residential Energy Savings Agreement or ESA. This states that we will contract with you to provide an extensive tune-up on your HVAC system two times per year. Once in the spring and once in the fall. This agreement provides for a 15% discount on all repairs and parts and makes you a priority customer. That means you get service as soon as possible with no overtime charges. (for more info on the ESA go to the following link). The ESA agreement is $270.00 for three tune-ups the first year and then $180.00 for the renewal for the following year.

  3. Do you offer senior citizens discounts?

No. However if you sign up for the ESA service agreement you do get 15 % discount on all repairs.

  4. How do your service charges compare with other heating/cooling contractors?

Our service charges are in line with the majority of other heating/cooling contractors. However, in most cases Bassett Services performs a more complete and comprehensive inspection and cleaning of your heating and cooling system than other companies. Our individual tune-up price is $99.95. For a more detailed list of what we do for our service and tune-up programs go to the following sections; ( link to tune-up and service list sheets)

Trouble Shooting Your Heating/Cooling System and Accessories

  1. I turned the air conditioning on for the first time and the condensing unit will not run. What should I do?

First, check to make sure the breaker for the air conditioner in your power panel is in the on position. Second if there is a disconnect box to the outside condenser unit turn it on. If after turning these on the A/C still will not run, call us.

  2. There is a lot of moisture and humidity in the house even though I am running the air conditioning unit. Why is that?

It could be a couple of things. First, check the air filter in your system. Make sure it is not plugged or very dirty. A plugged or extremely dirty air filter can significantly restrict the air flow through your air handler and reduce the efficiency of the air conditioning unit. Second, it is possible that there is a leak in the outside compressor Freon line or that the Freon charge is low. In either case the A/C unit will not cool the coil and not remove the moisture from the air. Get the unit serviced as soon as possible.

  3. The air conditioning is running but the house will not cool down. I keep lowering the thermostat temperature but nothing happens. What should I do?

First, check to make sure your furnace filter is not plugged or very dirty. A plugged filter could severely restrict air flow and reduce capacity of the air handler. If this is not the problem then you may have lost some Freon in the compressor or there is a leak in the Freon line. Get the unit serviced. Call us.

  4. There is water on some of my windows during the summer even though I am running my air conditioning. What causes this?

The structural design of the home, the layout of the ductwork and returns and supplies and the tightness of the home are all variables that may be part of this problem. Usually the best solution is to have a contractor check the air conditioning system or consider using a whole-house dehumidifier unit. The newer, tighter homes do not breathe as well as the older homes and tend to hold in moisture longer. Also, make sure the air conditioning system has been serviced. Call us.

  5. I have one of those new digital programmable thermostats. Can you tell me how to program it?

Unlike the older dial style thermostats, the newer digital thermostats allow you to control temperature settings for any day of the week and for any time of the day. Read through the manual that came with the thermostat. If you don’t have the manual you may want to go on-line and see if the company that makes the thermostat has instructions you can download. If it is one that we installed call us or go to our main menu and you can find a link to that company (usually Trane Thermostats).

Indoor Air Quality Program
IAQ Testing, Duct Cleaning, Air Filtration

  1. What type of indoor air testing can you do?

We can test for mold and bacteria, CO and CO2, do particle size analysis and temperature and humidity. We can also test for air flow from the HVAC system as well as take temperature readings from the supply and return air grills.

  2. Do you do duct cleaning?

Yes. Our duct cleaning program includes the use of a large, very powerful, duct cleaning vacuum truck that allows us to pull air through all the ducts and remove all the debris, dust and dirt.

  3. How does your duct cleaning system differ from others and why is your program more expensive?

Many companies just use a small portable vacuum unit and extend a short hose into the supply and return air grills and try to clean as far into the duct as possible, which is usually only about 5 to 8 feet. This process is very ineffective and can cost up to $350.00. We use a large, powerful vacuum truck and attach a large flexible duct to the return and supply plenum, and selectively block off sections of the duct work and pull from each individual line while blowing compressed air from the other end. This ensures we are getting all the debris and dirt from the entire duct system. This process takes two men up to four (4) hours or longer to complete. Our costs range from $400.00 to $800.00 for most HVAC systems.

  4. How often should I change my furnace air filter?

For the general duty, fiberglass throw-away filter you should change that once every month. If you use a pleated media 1” filter then you should change those once every three months. For the 4” pleated media filters the recommended replacement time is 12 months. However, you need to check these every two months to make sure they do not get too dirty or plugged as they will restrict air flow through your furnace blower. Changing your furnace filter on a regular basis is important. A dirty or plugged filter can severely reduce the air flow and overall heating and cooling capacity of your system.

  5. What does the MERV rating mean for the filters?

MERV or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value is a new method for rating the overall efficiency of air filters relative to their ability to remove a certain percentage of small to large particles and their resistance or pressure drop. The higher the MERV rating the more efficient the filter is on smaller particles and it also means the filters are more restrictive. There is a MERV rating chart on our website. For more information go to the following link (MERV chart)

  6. What type of filters or filtration systems can I purchase from Bassett Services?

We offer an entire range of filters and filtration systems from general duty filters to HEPA filtration systems. We offer the new BioPanel dual-layer polyester ring panel filter that has a high dust holding capacity and low pressure drop and fits tightly in the filter frame so there is no dust bypass. This is a MERV 8 filter. We also offer a line of media filters and electronic filters combined with media filters. In addition, we offer the new Trane CleanEffects high efficient electronic air cleaner. For more information on these filters and filtration systems please visit the Air Cleaners section of our web site.

Thermostats, CO Monitors, Humidifiers

  1. How do I set my digital thermostat?

Unlike the older dial style thermostats, the newer digital thermostats allow you to set the temperature for any time of the day and any day of the week. You should read through the manual that came with the thermostat. This will provide you with step- by- step instructions on the use and function of the digital thermostat. If it is a Trane thermostat or we installed it for you and you are not able to program the unit call us.

  2. I have one of your CO monitors in my house. How often do I change the battery?

The CO monitor has a built in low battery signal. If the monitor beeps once every 60 seconds this means the battery is running low and needs to be changed. Removing the screws from the back of the monitor will expose the battery compartment. Replace with same style battery. If we service your HVAC equipment our tune-up technicians can check the monitor and replace the battery for you.

  3. Where should I place the CO monitor and how many do I need?

You should have one CO monitor for each level of your home and especially locations near to any fuel-burning appliance of fireplace or near an attached garage. The monitor should be set no higher than 6 feet above the floor.

  4. . How often should I replace my humidifier pad?

It is essential that you replace the humidifier pad at least once a year even if you only run the humidifier part of the year.

  5. Should I leave my humidifier turned on all the time?

It is not necessary to have the humidifier on in the summer months. You should turn it off. However, remember to turn it back on before the heating season begins.
